First Two Weeks in Pictures

A Bird’s-eye-view of our Colonia

We’ve seen the pictures: snow and more snow; snowsuits, boots and toques; skis and toboggans; rosy, red cheeks and noses. We thought you could use a little bit of green vegetation and warm smiles to thaw those fingers and toes. Here’s a bit of what we’ve been doing.

GREETINGS

In the many months since we’ve been able to be here, there have been some changes. Kids are taller. Some people have moved to new houses or to new communities. Some have new jobs. Some have lost jobs. For some, the pandemic was scary. For some, new independence developed. A few, unfortunately, died in that first bad wave.

What didn’t change was the warmth of greetings from long time friends. These two weeks have been an opportunity to reconnect.

SPIT SPOT

Much of the last two weeks has been spent cleaning, laundering, and repairing. Before we arrived, Belkis and Marcio spent a day cleaning the living area of our house. Since then we have been sorting through cupboards and shelves. How do people collect so much stuff?!! All the clothing and linens we had in the house has needed washing. Suyapa, Meri and Carlos scrubbed the apartment, windows and walls inside and out. When your neighbours burn wood (and garbage, and plastic) there is a lot of dust and soot accumulate in every crevice in two years.

BABY VISITS

There have been lots of babies born that we were anxious to meet and greet.  We’ve still a few to catch up with in the next few weeks.

Arezzi and Victor’s little Victor Leonel.

RECREATION

With two weeks of catching up and work, we hope to get lots of opportunities to enjoy this beautiful tropical island soon. Long time friends, Don and Jeanette, arrived Saturday to join in the fun with us. We are anticipating a few adventures in the near future.

FUN STUFF

We don’t always have a camera to catch some of the funny antics and sights.  However -

1. It is impossible to get up before the rooster crows, since the roosters crow at all hours. But, we were up and going before the dogs.

2. On the winding road to Coxen Hole we were entertained by the water truck ahead of us. When the road curved to the left, the passenger door opened, and when the road curved to the right it closed - almost. Quite an effective way to keep pedestrians alert.

3. Sugar is a biggie here.  It starts with breakfast.

4. Alex is working to earn for his family by carrying blocks up, up, up for a building project. I remember when he was just a little guy in Children’s church! Time flies and kids grow up.
