🫶🏼 Our (Almost) Half-time Show 👀




As there is much to-do about halftime shows this weekend, we are sending you one that is family-friendly and will give you all sorts of warm fuzzies as we share in pictures what we have been doing during the first weeks of our time back in Roatan.      

These first weeks have been a time of preparations for back to school - registrations, shopping, and problem-solving. Larry has had some time for exploring the local hardware and lumber yards. Although the weather has not motivated beach time (Mr. Sun seems to have gone on vacation - "maybe next week" everyone says - again) there have been opportunities to return to a few local restaurants, and also share in family celebrations. Best of all, it has been a time to reconnect with friends and share our stories. There have been lots of smiles and hugs, and lots of walking as we get out and about. It's why we're here, and what we enjoy. 

So Good to See You!

Sometimes it's a quick on-the-street hello, sometimes it's a good ol' sit down visit - each time we grow deeper connections.

Food Time is Good Time! 

Our first meal back - and several since - was prepared by Samona, friend, next door neighbour, and fantastic chef. For me - head off fish would be ok. Food is best when shared with friends.  

Celebrating Good Times

Dino and Laura both celebrated another birthday 🎈 and we were able share the fun. 

Off to School We Go 📚

We come here in January for the purpose of registering kids for school. This year we have nine kids registered in four private schools. Being able to pop into each school to complete the registration gives us an opportunity to view where our kids will be spending their days and provides a chance to connect with the school administration in a personal way. Our local public school has a new director and a new look. We are excited for the public school kids as they prepare to start their new year.

Shopping

Our kids are ready! Several days have been spent together with moms and kids shopping for uniforms and supplies in the Colonia and in town. In the same way that we in Canada have seen steep increases in prices this year, our families are noticing increases in all that they buy. Store keepers are also noticing the effects of online shopping - a new experience for people here as some try out Amazon and Temu. 

Project Work 

Larry and Franklin - back together. Most recently, a cement pad for a bodega at the clinic was completed. Each project, large or small, provides opportunities to check out the local hardware and lumber stores.

Out and About

With the busy-ness of school start-up and project fun, and this cold, rainy weather, outings have been limited. We do intend to change that as soon as Mr. Sun returns! However, here are a few pictures to tease your tropical imagination.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

It really is unfair of us to complain about the weather when at least we don't need to shovel it. We have also recently experienced the coldest temperatures recorded in Roatan. We are snug and high and dry in our apartment but many who live and work at sea level have been flooded repeatedly. Our "path" to the main road is a muddy mess. Along with the rain, beaches are being inundated with sargassum (seaweed) with the result that tourists are having an unpleasant visit this year. How will this effect the tourist industry and employment in the future?

🌴Summer on the Island 🐠

Hello! Hello! Greetings from the hot Tropics to the hot everywhere else. When we made plans to come to Roatan this summer, we had a few goals as well as leaving freedom to have our plans change.   We are satisfied that we have been able to accomplish lots in the past month while at the same time we are learning to find pleasure in the daily routines of life here also. We aren’t exactly in the “don’t worry, be happy” state of mind, but there has been a lot less go-go-go. I expect in a month that will all change with fall harvest, but this has been quite pleasant. Anyone else know what I mean? One of our goals with this trip was to get the roof on Chris and Laura’s house replaced. Laura mentioned back in March that she had to cover her furniture with plastic and put out buckets whenever it rained, because the old tin roof was thin and leaking. This was accomplished early in our stay. A connection was made with a roofer. He and Larry travelled to the hardware store in town, purchase...

🌞 Let It Shine - April Update 🌞

Le t your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  ~ Matthew 5:16        Yes. Let it shine!   It’s spring and we are anticipating sun – and showers. Whether the skies are blue or gray - we can shine. And shine is what we hope we have been doing with our time in Roatan. While we are not involved with teaching in the church, we hope those who we meet – old friends or new – know that what we do is because of Jesus and what He has done for us. We are home back in our snug house where Larry will wait for spring and then start spring planting. We have had our first birthday celebration with family, and this weekend we will attend our nephew’s wedding. We do wish our brains would arrive on the same plane as our bodies, but it could be they are lost in transit permanently. ...
