🚧 The Bodega Project 🚧

With a team coming from the US eager to build a bodega (shed) next to the new parking lot at Clinica Esperanza, Peggy contacted Franklin to prepare the cement pad for them to build on. Franklin confirmed with Larry about supplies and placement of the pad. Soon Larry and Franklin had their days filled, checking prices, preparing the ground, and ordering supplies.

The foundation was dug and cement mixed and poured. The pad was completed with time to spare.

While waiting for the team, blocks, cement, a cement mixer, and other supplies were ordered. All was ready for the team to come.

A team of 5 eager workers arrived. They were happy to have the local team of Franklin, Larry, Nahun and Milton join them and the walls took shape. The team had seen the walls going up but had to leave the local team to finish.

While waiting on the cement in the blocks to set, again Franklin and Larry canvased local hardware stores for the remaining materials to add the trusses, roof, doors, cement for parging the walls and nails, screws, hinges and door knobs.  Much retail therapy was enjoyed!

A few items were not available. Nahun had a portable welder and offered it to Larry to weld up the necessary brackets to hold the rolling door. The guys had lots of opportunities to exchange and learn skills, with Larry deeming that the 3 other guys were ready to set up an independent bodega building business.

Even the nearby outhouse was refurbished using up the left over blocks - and additional materials from a few more shopping trips.

At this time the bodega will be used for a storage shed for materials awaiting use in the clinic or the new construction. Once interior walls and electricity is added (another trip, Larry?), Peggy has plans to use a part of the building for an annex to the clinic. Franklin, Nahun and Milton will have the pleasure of continuing. Larry needs to do some farming.

🫢🏼 Our (Almost) Half-time Show πŸ‘€

As there is much to-do about halftime shows this weekend, we are sending you one that is family-friendly and will give you all sorts of warm fuzzies as we share in pictures what we have been doing during the first weeks of our time back in Roatan.       These first weeks have been a time of preparations for back to school - registrations, shopping, and problem-solving. Larry has had some time for exploring the local hardware and lumber yards. Although the weather has not motivated beach time (Mr. Sun seems to have gone on vacation - "maybe next week" everyone says - again) there have been opportunities to return to a few local restaurants, and also share in family celebrations. Best of all, it has been a time to reconnect with friends and share our stories.  There have been lots of smiles and hugs, and lots of walking as we get out and about.  It's why we're here, and what we enjoy.  So Good to See You! Sometimes it's a quick on-the-street hello, sometimes ...

πŸ§—The Stairmaster πŸ”

Looking for a stairmaster workout? The place to find this would be in the large colonia in Sandy Bay.  With elevations ranging from sea level to up-up-up, the cardio and leg strengthening grind makes it the ideal workout. The land is folded, sort of like a fan, with roads, houses and buildings originally being built in the folds. As the land has filled with people, the houses have been built up and over the folds and up and back to the crest of the island. Estimates of how many people live in this colonia are - estimates. Numbers suggested range from 7,000 to 10,000 people. Many of the houses are accessed by side roads/paths some quite steep running up the folds.    In order to get to the houses beyond these side paths families and communities have dug into the rock (sometimes mud) to create steps. Over time many have built cement steps - up, up, up you go (and of course down, down when you leaving. ) Recently, we started taking pictures of the stairways we encountered in...

🐠 Summer Visit in Photos πŸ’«

The  Summer of '25. It seems wherever you found yourself this summer, it was HOT. And, no  doubt about it - summer in Roatan is a hot time. You just know it is, so you get on with whatever your day holds - morning is best. For us this summer, we were able to spend much of our time visiting. We caught up with all of our students and made tentative plans for next school year. We were able see moms and kids that we were missing. A few house repair jobs were completed. We also enjoyed time relaxing. There is, after all, a reason for that siesta time in the afternoons. Take a peak - time for Show, Not Tell.  (For Tell, see update published previously "Summer on the Island"). 🌴Out and About πŸ’œ Our Grown-Up Kids Top left and around: Greicy; Coco with Senia and baby Leah; Jessie with baby Dilan; Oscar with Saira. πŸ’™ Our Kids on Parade - Independence Day Parade Sept. 14 and 15, 2025.
